The alarm is the first sound you hear as your day begins, and if you are anything like I used to be, it isn’t just once. The magical snooze button creates an opportunity for the jolting alarm to go off repeatedly.

Your nervous system is highly sensitive, and the moment your day begins, it is now highly stimulated.
Who doesn’t want to begin their day in fight or flight right!?
As hormones course through your body, you stagger to the coffee pot and groggily fill your cup with liquid stimulant (which by the way I adore!).
The days events run through your head, Tommy has band, Julie has dance. When will we have time for dinner? What IS for dinner? Who will drive who where?
Panic ensues as everyone vies for counter space in the kitchen and bathroom.
Screams of “where is my favourite shirt?”, “why don’t I have any clean clothes”, “I forgot to do my homework”, cascade in to your morning.
You pick up your beautiful cup of coffee. And it’s gone cold with barely a sip. Sigh.
This was my life.
Every morning was a rush, disorganized, and overwhelming.
In truth I dreaded it.
Legitimately hated mornings.
The past year and a half has been a huge learning curve on taking the things in my life I didn’t like, and spinning them to find ways to enjoy, and celebrate them.
So that meant mornings needed a complete and utter overhaul.
Instead of recreating the wheel, I started to seek out ideas for ways to make mornings magical, which would require little to no work on my end.
After months of trial and error, here are my top seven ways to make mornings easier. (These may not be for you, but will hopefully allow you to start your own enjoyable morning research project).
1. I stopped feeding my kids. I don’t mean I made them starve or denied them food, I mean I allowed them to take responsibility for making their own breakfast and lunches. At the time the youngest was ten, very capable of learning this life skill. So much time was wasted when I would ask “what do you want for breakfast?”, and the answer was “I don’t know”. Frustration and anger lived in these conversations, and when I stopped, my kids learned to eat what they wanted AND I got to drink more than one sip of coffee. Winning!
2. Wake up earlier. Groan. I know you are. And this ONLY works if you are a morning person by nature. There is such an incredible peace to the beginning of your day when you can drink your coffee without any distractions. When you put yourself first and do something that feels luxurious. Like finishing an entire cup of coffee with no yelling, screaming or demand on you. Magic.
3. Create a morning routine. After you are up anyway, you may want to do some productive things to make this time ultra valuable. I looked up what successful people were doing in the morning and played around with all I read until I found my favourites. You may be completely happy with coffee and silence. Which is incredible. I love getting my mind ready for changing lives by reading, doing affirmations, scripting, journaling, working out, and meditating.
4. Meditating. It Is everything everyone says it is. Game changer. Creator of peace and calm. Energy magnifier. Gift of the Gods. Taking as little as five minutes every morning, with or without music or words, stimulates a calming neurological response in the body making you more capable of knowing there is stress and not being affected by it. Meaning you are able to respond, instead of react to life. This was the most powerful thing I ever learned to do in my life.
5. Move your body. I am still working on this one. Blood flow is pretty powerful, and when we get it moving and grooving in the mornings, we change our body. Not just in the physical way, but energetically as well. We use energy and then our metabolism is higher all day as we work towards paying back the energy used. We are more focused and connected to ourselves. Inner awareness! It’s the bomb!
6. Listen to music or a podcast. Standing at the mirror doing make up and hair used to feel so boring and wasteful of time. I dreaded it. It used to take an incredible pep talk to get me there. Then I made a Latin playlist and downloaded some incredible podcasts (my current favourite is How I Built This, by Guy Raz). Now I LOVE getting ready! I’m either grinding my hips and feeling sexy as my day starts, or I’m learning that everyone feels like they are failing in the beginning of entrepreneurship. Both make me happy!
7. Positivity. Ok… there are a few different ways to do this one that may or may not work for you, but knowing YOU are the first person you hear and see in the morning is powerful. I’m not talking “you can do it” cheerleading dialogue here. I’m talking deeper conversation and connection. Look yourself in the eye in the mirror and say “I love you”, and “you are perfect just the way you are”. You might not believe yourself at first, but keep talking. When you are putting cream on after a bath or shower, tell each body part you love it. Yes ankles and bum count. These small practices make big impacts. When you feel this way about yourself for you, it’s easier for others to see you the same way you see yourself.
You may not like any of these and that’s totally ok! I’m sharing the seven ways my life and business has transformed by making mornings my favourite part of my day.
I could add an eighth as well, which is I don’t have my phone in my bedroom anymore and the last thing I want to wake up to is a shrill alarm clock going off.
My Fitbit vibrates at 5:30 am and 5:37 am to gently rouse me from my bed.
This has been my favourite new routine.
There is so much more peace as I gently come awake, grab my morning coffee, and make my way to my favourite morning spot to read, journal and meditate.
