The Top 5 Ways Being Sober for Three Months has Impacted my Business

Sometimes just a little, and often times way too much. When I was in my early twenties, I worked in a local bar, and that’s when I started to experience “blackouts”. An alcohol blackout is when you drink too much too fast and the neurotransmitters in the brain can’t imprint short term memories into long term memories. This translates into waking up in the morning and having to ask, “what did I do last night?”. For the last three years I have tried to quit, though not very hard, I have to admit. So in April I decided to read a book that had been suggested to me, multiple times. I don’t know about you, but I can only listen to people who have my best interest at heart, when I’m ready for the outcome. The book was This Naked Mind by Annie Grace. And it changed my life. Since reading this book I’ve only been tempted to drink a couple of times. The most tempting was at the beginning of quitting. I brought the book to Scotland with me to read on a pilgrimage. On our last night there, my husband and I were alone and went out for a date. Walking in to a pub, the atmosphere screamed have a pint of Guinness. For a few minutes I played the game of “should I, shouldn’t I?”. But in the end, what I learned in the book was enough to keep me strong. I had soda water. Since coming home, I’ve learned a few things about my sober self. I would like to share my top five and how they have impacted my business. 1. I CAN wake up early. Not only can I wake up early, I can wake up without an alarm clock. My eyes pop open between 5:30- 6:00 am every morning and I’m ready for the day. No snoozing. No blaring noise. Just, up she gets. This means I have plenty of time to dedicate to my morning routine. I grab a cup of coffee, head to my office (which is a converted garage that looks like the inside of a genie’s lamp), and pick up my latest read. I follow reading with morning gratitudes, I meditate, do a workout and get ready for the day. By the time I sit down to my computer,  my body and mind are plugged in to Source and I’m ready to serve. 2. Exercise is my alternative to drinking. This became a thing because in the beginning, I didn’t know how to fill the gaps of time of when I would drink. Saturday afternoon at 3 pm… What do you do if you don’t go to the bar and drink? Apparently you walk. Or at least, that’s what I started to do to curb the restlessness I was feeling. Have you ever gone for a walk and had huge “aha’s” about where your business was going and how you could make it happen? Well I have to tell you, me and Mama Nature are doing some good work together. I often times come home from a walk, inspired to take action in some way in my business. That never happened when I got home from the bar. 3. Not drinking on a Saturday afternoon, or after work, or out on a date with my husband means I am always open to jump on a call if someone needs me. When a potential soul client reaches out to connect about working together, being able to jump on a call at any time, is the bomb. It feels so good to be able to respond immediately. Instead of looking at my phone, getting distracted, and then forgetting all together. Being present and able to respond any time, any where, shifts the way you show up for your peeps. There is no better feeling. 4. I get so much more done in a day. Sometimes I surprise myself. I have recently taken to saying “who is this Tamara?”. So much content, copy and program material flow from my sober soul. My to do list doesn’t have a chance as I devour everything it throws at me. There is no better feeling than looking at your to do list in the middle of the week and realizing you have already accomplished everything. Instead of taking on more, I give myself space to relax, walk, and celebrate how far I’ve come. 5. Not drinking inspires others. From my husband, to my clients, to people I barely know. So many people have reached out to share a part of their story with alcohol. My purpose in life is to be as transparent as possible and share all parts of myself. The messy, the strong, the vulnerable, the joyous. Nothing is kept hidden. As scary as this has been, admitting my addiction and sharing how it’s impacted my life, has been one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever been through. The love, the support and the emotional connections that have been made, far exceed anything a drink has to offer. Knowing there is that much love behind me, inspires me to show up even more fully tomorrow to help others stand in their stardust and shine. These are the top five ways being sober has affected my business, but there is a bonus. The bonus is the reason my husband has cut back considerably, and is definitely good for our marriage. What’s rocking between the sheets has become SO MUCH BETTER. When you quit drinking, it increases your senses. Without going in to too much detail, the sensitivity factor has gone up dramatically for both of us, resulting in the best sex of my life! From the time I wake up to the time I go to bed, everything is better being sober. Even getting up at 5:30 am to finish this blog. Today I begin a three day retreat with the most amazing soul clients, and getting up early to write and work out doesn’t suck. Because I feel good.
